Description
A Southern classic, shrimp and grits is a comforting dish of sautéed shrimp served over creamy grits, often flavored with cheese and spices.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup grits
- 4 cups water
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 pound shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 4 slices bacon, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 cup green onions, sliced
Instructions
- In a saucepan, bring water and salt to a boil. Stir in the grits and reduce heat to low. Cook for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally until thickened.
- Stir in the cheddar cheese until melted and smooth. Set aside.
- In a large skillet, cook the diced bacon over medium heat until crispy. Remove bacon and set aside, leaving the drippings in the pan.
- Add olive oil to the skillet, then add the shrimp, garlic, cayenne, and black pepper. Cook until shrimp are pink and cooked through, about 3-5 minutes.
- To serve, spoon the cheesy grits onto plates, top with the shrimp mixture, and garnish with crispy bacon and green onions.
Notes
- For a creamier texture, use half-and-half instead of water for the grits.
- You can add a splash of lemon juice for brightness.
- Feel free to adjust the spices to your taste.
