Ingredients

  • 4 large potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a greased baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes.
  3. Sprinkle half of the sliced onions and half of the minced garlic over the potatoes.
  4. Pour half of the heavy cream over the layer, then sprinkle with half of the salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
  5. Add half of the shredded cheddar cheese on top.
  6. Repeat the layers with the remaining ingredients, finishing with a layer of cheese on top.
  7. Dot the top with small pieces of butter.
  8. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  9. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.
  10. Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, add cooked bacon or ham to the layers.
  • You can use different types of cheese such as Gruyere or Monterey Jack for variation.
  • Make sure to slice the potatoes evenly for consistent cooking.
