Description
A classic German dessert featuring layers of rich chocolate cake, coconut, and pecan frosting.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup boiling water
- 1 cup shredded coconut
- 1 cup chopped pecans
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 cup evaporated milk
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup butter
- 3 large egg yolks
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Mix well.
- Add eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes.
- Stir in boiling water until well combined. The batter will be thin.
- Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove from pans and cool completely on wire racks.
- In a saucepan, combine evaporated milk, granulated sugar, butter, and egg yolks. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until thickened.
- Remove from heat and stir in coconut and pecans. Let the frosting cool.
- Once the cakes are completely cool, spread the coconut-pecan frosting between the layers and on top of the cake.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, use dark cocoa powder.
- This cake pairs well with vanilla ice cream.
