Description
A classic Southern dish featuring tenderized beef steak coated in seasoned flour and fried to golden perfection, served with creamy gravy.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 beef cube steaks, about 1/2 inch thick
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- 1 cup milk
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a shallow dish, combine flour, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and cayenne pepper.
- In another shallow dish, whisk together the eggs and buttermilk.
- Dip each cube steak into the flour mixture, then into the egg mixture, and back into the flour mixture, ensuring an even coating.
- Heat about 1/2 inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- Fry the coated steaks in batches for 3-4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Remove and drain on paper towels.
- In the same skillet, reduce the heat to medium and melt the butter. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute.
- Gradually whisk in the milk and cook until thickened. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Serve the chicken fried steak with gravy poured on top.
Notes
- For extra crispy steak, let the coated steaks sit for 10 minutes before frying.
- You can use a meat mallet to tenderize the cube steaks further if desired.
