Ingredients

  • 4 beef cube steaks, about 1/2 inch thick
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a shallow dish, combine flour, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and cayenne pepper.
  2. In another shallow dish, whisk together the eggs and buttermilk.
  3. Dip each cube steak into the flour mixture, then into the egg mixture, and back into the flour mixture, ensuring an even coating.
  4. Heat about 1/2 inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  5. Fry the coated steaks in batches for 3-4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  6. In the same skillet, reduce the heat to medium and melt the butter. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute.
  7. Gradually whisk in the milk and cook until thickened. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  8. Serve the chicken fried steak with gravy poured on top.

Notes

  • For extra crispy steak, let the coated steaks sit for 10 minutes before frying.
  • You can use a meat mallet to tenderize the cube steaks further if desired.
