- 1 sheet of puff pastry, thawed
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup Gruyere cheese, shredded
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- Fresh thyme, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Roll out the puff pastry and fit it into a tart pan. Prick the bottom with a fork and set aside.
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add the onions, sugar, salt, and pepper, and cook, stirring frequently, until the onions are caramelized, about 20-25 minutes.
- Spread the caramelized onions evenly over the puff pastry.
- In a bowl, whisk together the eggs and heavy cream. Pour the mixture over the onions.
- Sprinkle the shredded Gruyere cheese on top.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until the tart is golden brown and set.
- Let cool slightly before slicing. Garnish with fresh thyme if desired.
