Description
This air fryer blooming onion recipe gives you a crispy, flavorful treat without the excess oil. Perfect for sharing or as a tasty snack!
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 large onion, preferably a sweet variety
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional for heat)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup buttermilk (or milk with 1 tablespoon vinegar)
- 1 cup breadcrumbs (panko preferred)
- Cooking spray
Instructions
- Cut the top off the onion and peel the outer skin. Slice the onion from the top down to the bottom in 12-16 evenly spaced cuts, being careful not to cut all the way through the base.
- In a bowl, mix together the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper.
- Dip the onion into the buttermilk, ensuring it gets fully coated, then sprinkle the flour mixture over it, making sure the flour gets in between the petals.
- Once coated, dip the onion back into the buttermilk and then into the breadcrumbs, ensuring it is well covered.
- Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C).
- Spray the blooming onion with cooking spray to help it crisp up during cooking.
- Place the onion in the air fryer basket and cook for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. You may need to adjust the time depending on your air fryer model.
- Carefully remove the onion and let it cool slightly before serving with your favorite dipping sauce.
Notes
- For a spicier version, increase the cayenne pepper to taste.
- Serve with ranch or your favorite dipping sauce for an extra kick.
- Make sure to cut the onion evenly to ensure all petals cook evenly.
